Gaby Reade works in printmaking and paints in oil.

In printmaking she uses non toxic methods such as solar plate etching, embossing, monoprint and collagraph.

Gaby's work encapsulates the natural world and the small and complex ecosystem that exist and flourish around plants and insects. Their symbiotic relationship are her focus. Highlighting and celebrating the precarious balance of nature and the beauty of patterns to be found in the world small creatures inhabit.

Her work has no singular narrative, but exists of multiple layers working together simultaneously.

One creative project feeds into the next, and the articulations that emerge along the way help her to make sense of her place in life.

Each new series of work poses new challenges. Medium, colour, paper and style of presentation are carefully chosen and applied.

“What it is all about chrysalises most often while working on a project, and as it reaches a conclusion, I realise I stare at the relationship and reaction I have with the world that surrounds me.”

Other work includes:

Brothers Grimm Fairytales. They are as relevant today as they were many centuries ago, they are timeless reflections of basic human fears, beliefs, dreams and emotions.

In order to give justice to these tales she learned the art of bookbinding - each story is presented in hand bound books of an edition of 5.

Fairy Tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. G.K. Chesterton

Born in Heidelberg, Germany she immigrated to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1986.

She is a member of Print Council Aotearoa New Zealand and The Critique Group Christchurch, where peer review and a supportive network amongst artists is the core principle.
